The Rules

How to Play Catchball

Catchball is played on a standard volleyball court with a net. The game combines elements of volleyball and handball, but instead of spiking, players throw and catch the ball. It's designed to be inclusive - no prior sports experience needed.

01

The Court & Setup

Played on a volleyball-sized court (18×9m) with a net at 2.15m height. Two teams of 6 players face each other across the net. Players rotate positions after winning a serve, just like in volleyball.

02

Gameplay

The ball is served by throwing it over the net. The receiving team catches the ball and has up to 3 passes between teammates before throwing it back over the net. A player may hold the ball for a maximum of 3 seconds. No spiking or hitting - the ball must always be thrown and caught.

03

Scoring

A point is scored when the ball touches the ground on the opponent's side, or when the opposing team commits a fault. Rally scoring is used - a point is awarded on every play regardless of which team served.

04

Match Format

Sets are played to 25 points (win by 2). A match is typically best of 3 sets. If a deciding set is needed, it is played to 15 points (win by 2). Teams switch sides between sets.

05

Equipment

All you need is a catchball (similar to a small volleyball), a net, and a court. Players wear comfortable sportswear and indoor/outdoor court shoes. No special protective gear needed.

06

Origins

Catchball originated in Israel, where it became one of the most popular women's sports. The sport has since spread to communities across Europe and beyond, including the Netherlands, where the NCA was founded in 2019.
